YiJing BaGua – A Novel Idea

Thought that there is a new fundamental in the market. Close scrutiny, just another gimmick out of the goody bags. In other words, garnishing the stale plate. What exactly is this YiJing BaGua?

To understand it one has to look at the left diagram attached. This is a Later Heaven 8 Trigram (LHBG). To explain why such arrangement is done that way, one postulation is to look at the solar path view from the earth in the Qi sequence of 12 growth phases, shortened to 8 phases.

Starts from Zhen trigram, wood Qi denotes Grow because the sun rises in the east. It gradually achieves Youth at the Xun trigram just as a tree grows into bushes in spring. When the Sun achieves maximum Yang, the summer heat scotches wood and result in bush fire at Li trigram. This fire Qi peaks into Prosperous phase. Yin is born and a downward cycle begins at Kun trigram where everything goes back to mother earth in a Weakening stage. Beneath earth, metal does form at the trigram Dui where the chilly autumn winds wither leaves making trees barren and surface of the earth morbid resemble the stage of Death. The trigram Qian, metal takes the form of reorganization waiting for the season to pass. It is the stage of Grave where ingredients of Life is at its dormancy, waiting to be reborn. Metal attracts water in the trigram Kan. The very life source, water is at its stage of Extinction in absolute Yin. Winter cold insult the Sun but it is also the cradle of Yang. It is a point of an upward cycle. By itself it cannot grow. It requires a medium which is earth in trigram Gen for supporting the root. With the ingredient of water and earth, it requires the Sun for life ignition. Therefore earth is in the stage of Conceive, an embryo ready to take another life form in spring. LHBG is perfectly explained in the context of 12 growth phases in its YinYang cycle, an epitome of SanHe’s postulation of Qi.

SanYuan look at Qi at a different perspective. This school does not look at the Sun as a predominant factor; instead it looks at the stars (solid) and space (void) to determine its reference point. It uses HeTu Qi instead. HeTu indicates the 4 enclosures. It has to morph into LoShu to give elemental meanings to the trigrams. Therefore, the fundamental of SanYuan sub systems liked DaGua, derived GuaQi from the amalgamation of EHBG with LoShu with each numeral takes HeTu Qi instead. That is where, Qian 9 takes metal, Kan 7 takes fire and the sorts.

The proprietor of YiJing BaGua is trying to equate a SanHe fundamental into a SanYuan model. That is where he proposes: - Qian:Fire, Kun:Water, Kan:Metal, Li:Wood, Gen:Metal, Dui:Wood, Zhen:Earth and Xun:Earth. HeTu Qi does not indicate earth Qi. It is a big mistake to equate such earth Qi with heaven Qi. They are totally different things.

By the same token, if you look at the diagram side by side, you will notice that giving a new elements to the trigrams are liked reading the trigrams in its Early Heaven positions liked early heaven of Qian is in Li, Kun is in Kan and so forth. So, there is really nothing extraordinary to such postulations.

If such YiJing BaGua is used to read the so called FeiXing chart, let say, #1-4 conjunctions, the normal reading would be Kan over Xun, water growing into wood. However, it would be the same in the YiJing FlyingStar, #1-4 is actually Kun over Dui, water growing into wood also. So, it is fundamentally flawed.

Even within the XuanKong subsystem, one cannot equate DaGua with FeiXing and postulate that DaGua is the principle and FeiXing is the applications. These are two different sub systems based on different fundamentals. DaGua is derived from Early Heaven Trigram whereas FeiXing is derived from Later Heaven Trigram. They are entirely different species.

Between Early Heaven and Later Heaven, there is a bridge. A workable FengShui method, be it SanHe or SanYuan is to enable the bridge to be in place. The question is what form does this bridge take place?
